Official launch of Our Space in Marbella

On entering the impressive foyer, we enjoyed a welcome glass of Cava poured in a unique way. A young lady, supported by a ribbon suspended from the ceiling, poured Cava into glasses while upside down.

A sweeping staircase lead to the first floor. It was clear to see that the design by Emmy nominated Hollywood production designer Carlos Barbosa was not going to disappoint. The event was well attended and the whole evening was very enjoyable with marvellous entertainment.

Our Space Marbella was officially opened by CIT Marbella’s President Juan José González Ramirez and key members of the Our Space management team including Kevan Halliwell (CEO), Sean Phillips (COO) and Carlos Fernandez (Membership Manager).

After the ribbon cutting, we were given a tour of the 500 square metre workspace. The aesthetic is distinct, with features creating a wonderful working environment that has been designed to boost productivity. With cutting edge technology and lifestyle services focusing on health and wellbeing, it aims to achieve a work/life balance whilst building a strong community of local and international businesses.

Marbella was chosen as the first location for this new and exciting global co-working company, confirming the Costa del Sol as an important business destination. The space offers 13 private offices with 140 desks in a shared co-working environment. It offers a flexible workspace which is available 24/7, with unrivaled services to enable the focus to stay on your business. There is an in-house healthy eating Pure Café concept from the team behind Pan y Mermalada and the Small World Café in Marbella. 

An investment of more than €600,000 has been made into creating this exceptional work environment and the team are committed to supporting entrepreneurship and offering every business working in the centre support, training and networking opportunities to help them to thrive.

We managed to secure an interview with Our Space’s Chief Operating Officer Sean Phillips:

So, tell us a little bit about Sean Phillips!

“I was born in Illinois, USA where I played soccer and ran health clubs for a living. I was head hunted and asked if I would like to go to England. The next thing you know, I am in Blighty working with kids at Living Well Clubs. After doing my time there, it was time to return to the States. But I then received a phone call from my good friend Mike Balfour of Living Well who had just bought a defunked squash club in Bournemouth. He asked me to pop down and take a look. So, from a very nasty old squash club, the very first Fitness First Health Club was born. By October 1996, we had six clubs.”

Surely, co-working is a very different concept to Fitness Clubs!

“Well, I actually got involved through Henry Dawson, a good friend who lives here in Marbella and who was a fitness instructor at Fitness First. Having sold a few memberships in my time (around 1.7 million), he asked if I could create a membership model for this. Having given it some thought, it sounded a lot like models already available. But, if they were happy to think outside the box and create something new, I was happy to talk.”

What sort of businesses have shown an interest in Our Space and signed up?

“We have quite a mixture, including lawyers, accountants, journalists, tech companies and new business start ups.”

So, this is the first one here in Marbella. What are the future plans for Our Space?

“We plan to open facilities in twelve key cities across the globe within the next 3 – 5 years. Although this is the first Our Space, we are not a start up company. The people behind Our Space are proven business people with years of experience. So, we are offering a great infrastructure. Another important point about being in key cities across the world, we will be able to offer members the opportunity to work in any of these workspaces, wherever they are.”

So what makes Our Space different?

“Most of us know about the stereotypical types of co working where you pay for the space and you are then charged for all of the extras you need to make it work. We don’t like that. So, we are offering a full service environment, helping to bring small businesses out of their homes and into a productive environment. It is an affordable way to work for Marbella’s self employed and professionals who travel.”

During the launch period, Our Space are offering the first month free of charge. This will enable businesses to try out co-working for themselves. We spoke to a number of the business people and they seemed delighted with the costs of membership which have clearly been designed to suit all businesses.

Our Space are also supporting local charity Arboretum Marbella by donating office space for a whole year, removing this cost from the charity and giving them the opportunity to make new contacts and meet members as they grow.

They will also be joining CIT Marbella and the British Chamber of Commerce.
