ITV Test in Andalucia
An ITV (Inspeccion Tecnica de Vehiculos) is the equivalent of an MOT in the UK and these tests take place in an authorized garage. If you live in Marbella, the nearest authorized ITV centres are in Málaga, San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona. This article also gives details of changes as of May 2018.
When do I need an ITV
It depends when the vehicle was first licensed. An ITV is not required if the vehicle is less than 4 years old. If it is over 4 years old, it will need an ITV every 2 years until it is 10 years old. If it is over 10 years old, an ITV will be required annually.
If your vehicle is over 4 years old and you are caught without a current ITV sticker (which is issued when the test is passed), you will be liable for a fine. Your license may also be confiscated if you fail to provide proof of passing the ITV within 10 days.
If you have an accident, your vehicle will require an ITV to confirm that is roadworthy.
Before booking an appointment
Many people prefer to take their vehicle to an authorized garage and request a “pre-itv”. The garage will check the elements required to pass the ITV. If your vehicle does fail, you will be given time to fix any problems and put in for the ITV again with no additional fee. There are a number of ex-pat garages who are happy to do this for you.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book an appointment on-line here. It is in Spanish, but the instructions are very simple:
Type your matricula number into the box marked “Matricula”.
Use the click down arrow in the second box to select “No. Bastidor”. Another small box will appear. Add the last six digits of your log book (Permisso de Circulacion).
Press siguiente (next). This will give you a local station, time and date. Change the date if it is not acceptable.
What paperwork do I need?
From September 15 2017, it has been compulsory to take your vehicle insurance certificate with you.
You will need your vehicle’s Log Book (Permiso de circulación)
Tarjeta inspeccion tecnica de vehiculos
What happens if my vehicle fails the test?
Changes in May 2018
Users of vehicles who suffer a failure or negative result will be able to go to a different test centre for the retest, as long as the faults have been rectified.
If your vehicle fails the test, the ITV center will provide a list of the problems that need to be fixed within two months. If you don’t fix them within the two month period, you will have to pay again to apply for the ITV.
ITV test centres will be obliged to have diagnostic reading tools that can be connected to the on board computers of the vehicles. This way it will be possible to detect if malicious software has been installed that alters the operation of the Airbag, the catalysts, or the particle filters.
Likewise, reviews should also be made in greater depth on the security elements. In the past, this would involve physical tests of the seat belts, but from now on the electronic elements that are accessed through the computer on board the vehicle will also be checked.
