Ballet Manon Live

The source of Kenneth MacMillan for Manon was the novel of the eighteenth century that had already known opera adaptations Massenet and Puccini. The premiere took place on March 7, 1794, with the leading roles danced by Antoinette Sibley and Anthony Dowell. The ballet quickly became a staple of the repertoire of The Royal Ballet, and a touchstone of adult and dramatic dance. MacMillan found a new empathy with the capricious Manon and his struggle to escape poverty. The sets of his usual collaborator, Nicholas Georgiadis, reflect this, portraying a world of luxurious splendor corrupted by miserable indigence. The spectacular ensemble scenes of MacMillan for the entire company create vivid and complex portraits of societies so distinct from Paris and New Orleans. But the passionate pas de deux from Manon and Des Grieux which recalls the intensity of previous MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet that drives this tragic story and Manon makes one of the most powerful dramas of MacMillan.
