Club Med and Magna Hotels & Resorts opening new hotel in Marbella

Magna Hotels & Resorts and Club Med are investing more than €70 million to refurbish the iconic Hotel Don Miguel in Marbella. Here, we will provide information from the commencement of this work to the re-opening which is currently scheduled for July 2019. MarbellaAzul.com will be reporting on all the press conferences to ensure that you are kept up to date with great images.

Laying the first stone

On Thursday April 19 2018, we attended a special press conference in the beautiful grounds of the old Hotel Don Miguel in Marbella where Maria Ángeles Muñoz (Marbella’s Mayoress), Jihad Megharief (President of Magna Hotels & Resorts), Dr Dokali Megharief (Founder of Magna Hotels & Resorts) and Henri Giscard d’Estaing (President of Club Med) were there to lay the first stone signifying commencement of the hotel’s refurbishment programme.

The first speech was by Jihad Megharief, who said “we are fulfilling the promise we made in May 2017 when the re-opening of this emblematic hotel was officially announced. It will be the best family hotel for events and businesses on the Costa del Sol due to Club Med’s management experience.” He then thanked the Marbella City Council and the Junta de Andalucía for their collaboration in this project and asked the residents of the North Trapiche for their patience whilst the remodelling is taking place. Henri Giscard d’Estaing and Maria Ángeles Muñoz then spoke about their pleasure in being involved with this project and what it means for Marbella.

Two aquatic dancers then performed a routine in a pool, recovering a time capsule and handing it over to Jihad Megharief followed by the official first stone ceremony. Maria Ángeles Muñoz, Henri Giscard d’Estaing and Jihad Megharief all placed their palm prints in the clay of the first stone.

Club Med’s unique vibrant and colourful design is inspired by strong cultural themes and the talent of the French designer Marc Hertrich. Founded in 1950, Club Med invented the concept of the all inclusive holiday. The very first Club Med in Spain was the resort at Alcudia Beach in the Baleares.

The new resort in Marbella will be ideal for a family clientele. It will offer child care from 4 months to 17 years, a wide variety of sports, wellness and cultural activities. It will be open for 11 months of the year, not only welcoming guests holidaying here, but also groups requiring meeting and event facilities.

Refurbishment of the Hotel Don Miguel

This hotel was a tourism icon during the 1970s and 1980s here in Marbella, but it closed its doors in 2004. The Magna Hotels & Resorts Group plan to completely refurbish the hotel and re-open it as a Club Med hotel in July 2019.

The selection process took more 18 months and 23 international operators expressed an interest in refurbishing the site. The President of the Magna Group, Jihad Megharief said “we will invest over €70 million to give this hotel a second life and a new beginning.”

The group are working hard to find a new name for the hotel. The interior and exterior of the complex will be completely remodelled, creating some 300 jobs during the construction period. And more when the hotel opens its doors.
