As the year-end approaches so does the need for non-residents who own a property in Spain to submit their annual tax declaration. Yes, if you are a non-resident in Spain you are still liable to pay taxes.

This declaration to the Spanish tax authorities is due by 31st December 2017. Anyone who lives less than 183 days a year in Spain is classed as being a non-resident for tax purposes. These are property taxes, known as IBI (Impuesto Sobre Bienes Inmuebles) and imputed income tax or rental tax, or a combination of both.

IBI is an annual property tax which is based on the rateable value of your property or catastral value. Whatever you do, don’t leave it until it’s too late. If you own a property in Spain you will also be liable to pay rubbish collection taxes to your local town hall. In many cases, you could be accruing a debt with the Spanish tax & local authorities without even knowing it.
