Interview with TRE chairman Martin Nathan about the upcoming Telethon
The Talk Radio Europe Telethon will be taking place this year from 10.00 – 19.00 on 25 November. You can hear it on 91.5 FM Costa del Sol East or 91.9 FM Costa del Sol West or 98.7 FM Gibraltar & Sotogrande or Click here for TRE online.
MarbellaAzul.com caught up with Martin Nathan (Chairman of Talk Radio Europe) and asked him what we can expect from this year’s telethon and how people can participate.
How long has TRE been holding this telethon?
We have been holding a telethon annually since January 2009. Some members of my current staff worked with the previous radio station REM who initiated the telethon format.
What is this year’s target and how do you expect to raise it?
We were thrilled last year when we raised €50.000. Our target this year is €100,000. We have always believed in setting the bar high. This year, we have a better chance of achieving our target. But it will very much depend on the number of individual donations over and above the money raised from the auction itself. To stimulate such donations, we have this year added a new feature on the telethon website called “In Memorium” where you can make a donation in memory of someone you know who has lost their life to cancer.
What can your listeners expect on the day?
There will be dedicated telephone numbers for donations. This year, we are inviting people to request a song to be played on the day for a minimum donation of €50.00 – email firstname.lastname@example.org to make a request. There is a “DONATE” banner on the TRE Telethon website.
On the day of the telethon, the format will change from our normal programming with the presenters working together in pairs. To add variety to the auction, we will have some live performances throughout the afternoon and we will also be playing the songs chosen by the donors. The telethon auction will begin at 10 am after Hannah Murray’s breakfast show. It will be an exciting day of radio, made more so by listener involvement with on-air bidding for the auction items shown on our website. They are all now open to bids.
Is there anything different this year?
Yes, this year we have published a “Fail-Safe” recipe book containing 109 recipes provided by TRE staff and listeners. The recipes really are “fail-safe” and it’s a great buy for your readers to keep and use or give away as a Christmas present. It is available to buy from the website in hard copy or you can download it for €10.00 (plus p&p). The books will also be on sale at all Cudeca shops and from the TRE studio at Centro Comercial La Colonia in San Pedro de Alcántara, Marbella. There is still time for people to help! It doesn’t take long to invite a group of friends to meet for lunch or just a coffee or smoothie and have a collection in aid of the telethon.
We would like to thank Martin for his time and we wish everyone at TRE great success with this year’s Telethon.
