Global Gift Celebrity Golf Challenge & Gala Dinner 2016
Global Gift Gala Dinner
The Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe in Marbella hosted the Global Gift Gala Dinner on the evening of 15 October following the celebrity golf challenge held at the Estepona Golf Club earlier in the day.
MarbellaAzul.com’s Roz and Derek James were of course there to bring you news and images from the red carpet photo call held before a dinner which was specially prepared by the hotel’s talented chefs. This was followed by a performance by Melissa Nkonda and an acoustic set from Ronan Keating.
We were again invited to interview some of the celebrities attending the gala.
Laura Hamilton, best known for the TV show “A place in the sun” was one of the first celebrities on the red carpet. She was wearing a stunning gown and she told Roz “I love coming to Marbella, because I get to stay in our home in San Pedro.” With regard to her gown, she said “I love to support local fashion, so yesterday I wore a dress by Spanish designer Jodie Bell. Tonight, I am wearing a dress from a boutique near to where I live in the UK called Lucinders”.
She was then asked what other projects she had been involved in since “A place in the sun” and said “I also have a travel website and a calendar coming out. So, I am very busy. But I am very pleased to be here to support this event.”
The very beautiful Alesha Dixon, who has a great sense of humour, then joined Roz and she was asked about her stunning outfit. Who is it by? She replied “Alesha Dixon of course! Just something I ran up earlier in my room. No, I’m joking. I have recently launched my second collection, so it made sense to wear something of my own.”
She was then asked if this was her first trip to Marbella. Alesha threw back her head and laughed. “No, I have been here many times before, getting my groove on down in Puerto Banús. But now I just like to come out here and relax with friends.”
Will you be judging “Britain’s got talent” again this year? “Yes I will. And I am very excited about it. But the auditions won’t start until January. There are so many projects I’m working on between now and then, but BGT will come around very quickly.”
When asked how long she will be staying in Marbella, she said “Unfortunately, not very long. My partner Azuka Ononye and I arrived here last night and we have to return to the UK tomorrow. I have just been enjoying some down time our daughter has just turned three, so, it has all been a little hectic. But, as the Global Gift is a charity I really believe in and support, I wanted to be here to show my support. I have told them if they need me for anything, all they have to do is pick up the phone and ask.”
Yes, it was a really great day and evening with lots of money raised for the three charities. Well done to all concerned!
Global Gift Celebrity Golf Challenge
The Estepona Golf Club was the venue for the first Global Gift Celebrity Golf Challenge on Saturday 15 October. Ronan Keating representing the Marie Keating Foundation and Maria Bravo a founder of the Global Gift Foundation have teamed up to bring us what we all hope will be an annual event here on the Costal del Golf.
MarbellaAzul.com’s Roz and Derek James were of course there to interview the attendees and bring you images of this important event.
The celebrities taking part with Ronan Keating included 2005 US Open winner Michael Campbell, actor James Nesbitt, Irish footballer Stephen Hunt and Spanish golfer Angel Hidalgo.
Following the photo call, Roz had a word with Ronan Keating who said “Maria has become a very good friend of my wife Storm. We have seen the fabulous work she has been doing with Eva Longoria-Baston and the Global Gift Foundation and we decided to team up. I really wanted to hold a golf event here in Spain and it has now become a reality. It is our first time here and we have learnt a lot. Hopefully, this will now become an annual event. It’s all about growth and strength and I am very optimistic about the fundraising.”
She asked Ronan if he was looking forward to this evening’s Gala and he said “Very much so. I will be doing an acoustic set at the gala and tomorrow I am off to Australia. I am on tour at the moment, but it has been great to have my family here and spend some time with the kids.”
Roz then had an opportunity to talk with British actor James Nesbitt who was charming and very funny.
How did the golf go for you today? “I was playing well, but I was playing with three other guys and of course I had to carry them for most of the round.” He laughed heartily whilst looking at his playing partners. “Actually, I played very badly for the first nine holes, but then I rallied and my partner and I won on the 18th.”
After congratulations and a beaming smile from James, who was obviously pleased with the result, Roz asked about tonight’s gala. He said “I have known Ronan for a long time and he gives so much of his time to the Marie Keating Foundation. He is a real credit to Ireland. It’s really wonderful to be able to link the Marie Keating Foundation with Cudeca. They both do such great work and I hope we can take this all over the world. I am sure it will be an annual event here. And why not! Just look at this weather and its mid October!!!”
Roz then asked, apart from “Cold Feet”, what else have you been up to? “I am doing a second series of “Lucky Man”. I’m so busy busy which is all good. But I am going to take December, January and February off and go away with my girls Peggy and Mary.” (both of whom appeared in the final two Hobbit movies. So following in dad’s footsteps.)
The wonderful Maria Bravo then took time to tell Roz “I am so happy to have teamed up with Ronan on this event. It’s always nice to see that you can do some good and still do something fun.” Roz then asked her about the linking of the two charities – the Marie Keating Foundation and Cudeca. “It’s a win win situation. The Marie Keating Foundation is very well known in the UK and Ireland and Cudeca is well known here in Spain. So, it will be great to get the word out about both of them through the Global Gift Foundation. Uniting them via the media will make it international. And that is of course what we do. Bringing foundations together and sending the message world wide.”
Roz then asked her how things were progressing with the Casa Global Project? Maria said “Slowly! There is so much to do. The Ayuntamiento tells me I have to be patient. They tell me Maria you are too Americanised and you want everything done now. Well maybe, but I am pushing softly softly. I was hoping that some of the therapy rooms would be available for the beginning of next year. But again, I am told I dream too big.” She shrugged and said “Well, I will continue to do so”.
It was a fantastic day at the Estepona Golf Club. Everyone enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere with the beautiful weather and a delicious BBQ – our compliments to the chefs. There was also an awards ceremony and a charity raffle
Maria Bravo this week previewed the 4th edition of the Global Gift Celebrity Golf Challenge. The event will take place on 15 October at the Estepona Golf Club, followed by a gala dinner and an unplugged concert with Irish singer Ronan Keating at the Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe in Marbella.
Maria Bravo was joined by Rory Leader, president and owner of the Estepona Golf Club, Rafael Olayam, CFO of the Cudeca Hospice, José María García Urbano, the Mayor of Estepona and José Bernal the Mayor of Marbella, uniting forces for these great causes.
The money raised will be donated to the Marie Keating Foundation, the Cudeca Hospice and the Global Gift Foundation – whose share will go to the Casa Global Gift Project here in Marbella.
Maria Bravo and Ronan Keating will be joined by Pixie Lott, presenter Vernon Kay, singer & presenter Alesha Dixon, actress and model Jodie Kidd and model Thom Evans & Oliver Cheshire in support of the foundations.
Maria Bravo said “We like to diversify our fundraising efforts and for the fourth year we have chosen golf. We live in what’s known as the Paradise of Golf, so a tournament of this magnitude makes sense. I know the amazing philanthropic work Ronan is doing for his foundation through its Golf Series. His passion is contagious! We jumped at the opportunity to invite him to join forces with us and celebrate the tournament together. Hopefully it will become an annual event”.
Ronan Keating said “When Maria told me about the golf tournaments Global Gift had organized in Marbella for the last three years, I wanted to get involved and continue my fundraising for the causes that are important to me, especially cancer. I think everyone that gets involved is going to have a great time and enjoy the Spanish hospitality we will receive.”
The competitors will play a Stableford tournament of 18 holes and there will be a maximum of 96 players. Estepona Golf came on board for this initiative thanks to the help and support of the Estepona Ayuntamiento (town hall), the local government of the town whose Mayor José María García Urbano is supporting the work of the Global Gift Foundation. Estepona Golf have kindly donated the course for the celebration of the tournament.
The dinner and acoustic performance will take place in the emblematic Hotel Gran Meliá Don Pepe in Marbella. The Meliá hotel chain have been helping the Global Gift Foundation across Europe for half a decade and on this occasion, they will again show their philanthropic side and commitment to social causes.
