Easter Week in Marbella 2016
Easter Week this year was relatively early. It started with Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) on Sunday 20 March and ended with Easter Sunday (Domingo de Resurrrección) on Sunday 27 March. There was sporadic rainfall at the beginning of the week, but fortunately only only one of the processions in Marbella had to be cancelled.
Palm Sunday is always a happy and joyous occasion. The procession starts at the Capilla de San Juan de Dios at 18.00 and makes its way around the old town. The streets here are extremely narrow and the Tronos (thrones) are large and heavy. The palms you see the children carrying are special, because they signify the welcoming of Jesus into the city of Jerusalem.
The Easter Sunday procession follows a mass at the Church of our Lady of the Incarnation (La Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación) in the old town at about 11.45 and goes through the Plaza de los Naranjos, down to Avenida Ricardo Soriano and back round to the church. The Mayor of Marbella José Bernal Gutiérrez was of course there with the usual bands and two Tronos (thrones).
As usual, huge crowds cheered the procession as it made its way through Marbella.
