Blue flags for Marbella beaches, green light for breakwaters
Marbella has received six blue flags this year, including five for beaches (Playa Artola, Playa Guadalmina, Playa El Cable, Playa El Faro and Playa Casablanca. This is however the first time we have won a blue flag for the Marina.
The blue flag certification is given by the International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)and there are exacting standards that have to be met. This year, Spain received awards for 579 of its beaches and 100 Marinas.
Green light for breakwaters
Marbella has also been given a green light for the reconstruction of the breakwaters (rock piers) in time for summer 2018. Marbella’s beaches have endured a significant amount of damage due to climate change and the breakwaters will go a long way towards resolving these problems.
Regional councillor Raquel Orts, who is responsible for sustainability in coastal areas has been discussing the much needed protection with the Environment Ministry in Madrid.
The first phase of this work in San Pedro de Alcántara and Nagüelles should start early next year.
